Heart Rate Variability (HRV) is a key metric in the overall homeostatic balance of the body.
HRV is simply a measure of the variation in time between each heartbeat. This variation is controlled by a primitive part of the nervous system called the autonomic nervous system (ANS). It is largely an indicator of how well the body is handling the Allostatic Load (stress load).
I didn't truly grasp HRV until I was exposed to the work of Dr. Marco Altini; so I decided to ask him to come on and help educate my listeners.
In this episode we talk about:
• Overview of Heart Rate Variability (HRV
• The Autonomic Nervous Systems as an informant of health and homeostasis.
• Daily HRV fluctuation vs. Baseline changes over time. Factors, value of data, and implications
• Different tools to measure HRV
• Can HRV fluctuations predict chronic or acute flareups (ie Autoimmune Disease Flare?)
• The impact of breathing practices and lifestyle changes on HRV?
About Dr. Altini
Marco holds a PhD cum laude in applied machine learning, a M.Sc. cum laude in computer science engineering, and a M.Sc. cum laude in human movement sciences and high-performance coaching. He has published more than 50 papers and patents at the intersection between physiology, health, technology and human performance. He is the co-founder of HRV4Training, advisor at Oura, guest lecturer at VU Amsterdam, and editor of the Wearables department of IEEE Pervasive Computing. He loves running.
