If you have difficulty falling asleep, difficulty staying asleep, early morning awakening, restless or non-restorative sleep, it may be time start addressing this concern.
There are three types of insomnia. 1) Transient Insomnia: which lasts up to 1 week and is usually due to a short-term stressor 2) Short-term Insomnia: which lasts 1-6 months and is usually associated with a more persistent stressor (ie. death or illness of a loved one or environmental factor), and 3) Chronic Insomnia: which lasts more then 6 months and is associated with a wide variety of disorders.
Potential causes and risk factors for insomnia include transient concerns such as stress, illness, travel, environmental disruption. Or medical concerns, such as depression, anxiety, sleep apnea, orthopnea, circadian rhythm disorders, restless leg syndrome, chronic pain, and others.
In addition, insomnia can be caused by medications, drug, alcohol, or stimulant use.
In today's episode my colleague and previous guest Dr. John Neustadt an joins me to peak on Insomnia. We discuss deeply about nutrient, hormonal, lifestyle, and neurotransmitter aspects of what effects sleep. Topics such as non-rem vs. rem sleep are covered. As well as cortisol, gaba, melatonin and ways that you can improve your sleep with nutrients and herbal medicine.
